Elizabeth Goldring has no usual profile of a pioneering researcher of the MIT (Massachussetts Institute of Technology). Artist and poet, her nevertheless worked in a laboratory of PUT to finalize(to work out) a " machine to see " who throws(plans) images on the retina of malvoyantes persons. Goldring and his(her) colleagues, who publish their results in the specialized review Optometry, tested the machine successfully on ten volunteers.

Elizabeth Goldring lost herself the sight because of a young diabetes. Ten years ago, his(her) doctor sends him(it) to make an exam to the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard to verify the state of his retina thanks to an ophtalmoscope laser with sweeping(scanning) (SLO, Scanning Laser Ophtalmoscope). The SLO throws(plans) a laser beam on the retina to determine if certain photosensitive cells still work. The doctors of Harvard threw(planned) an image on the retina of Elizabeth Goldring which was so able to see words for the first time for months.

She(It) worked with the inventor of the SLO, Robert Webb, doctors and the researchers of the MIT to finalize(to work out) her(its) " machine to see ". She(it) costs only 4.000 dollars against 100.000 for the SLO. The machine was relieved by the part(party) diagnosis and the laser was replaced by diodes LED.
The volunteers who tested the machine one been able to read "words" mixing letters and drawings, conceived by Goldring to be easier to decipher. They were also able to make a virtual visit of an unknown building(ship) to take marks before a true visit. Elizabeth Goldring wants to pursue its clinical attempts. She considers that this " machine to see " would be very useful for the persons whose vision is degraded because of the diabetes, of the maculaire degeneracy or of the glaucoma.
